47 Beak Street, Soho, is the first stand alone store for the Gant Rugger brand in the UK, Orwin & Ball were appointed by Gant UK as lead designers and project managers.
The project was completed in less than 3 months, from clients brief to opening the doors to customers - including design, procurement, approvals and construction.
Rugger explores the brand's unique heritage, reinventing vintage preppy classics that were right at the birth of American sportswear during the 1950's. The store is finished with reclaimed furniture and fittings, including 1930s teak furniture, a haberdashery counter, 1950s medical display cabinets and Danish shelving by Poul Cadovius.
In order to create this casual feel of found heritage all ‘permanent’ wall coverings were removed to reveal a previous life, some were kept (such as the butchers wall tiling) and some replaced.

This prestigious project created many challenges to the retail fit out team, to ensure that whilst the Plan A brief of sustainability was implemented, the aesthetics, customer experience, and operational requirements of M&S were also fully realised.
The project underlines Marks & Spencer’s ambition to be the world’s most sustainable retailer by 2015. It is part of its Plan A initiative to operate in the most sustainable fashion possible throughout its business. The efficiencies so far achieved by M&S have resulted in a benefits of tens of millions of pounds per year, and those figures are expected to grow.
With over 148,000 sq ft of selling space, the store is the biggest ever built by M&S and achieved a BREEAM Excellent rating.

Gant - George Street, Edinburgh
The flagship Gant store in Edinburgh was completed in June 2012. Orwin and Ball were lead designer and project managers for the scheme which refurbished almost 3000 sq.ft. of retail space.
The store was closed for only 5 weeks, allowing for the complete strip out, structural alteration and refurbishment.
The new interiors have been designed to complement and respond to the scale and proportion of the original Georgian interiors, a perfect setting for the contemporary and timeless quality of the Gant collections.
Some original features had unfortunately been damaged or concealed by less sympathetic previous refurbishments, the opportunity was taken to repair and express this character.
Located on George Street in the heart of Edinburgh’s historic New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain, the property was constructed in the late 18th century then remodelled in the mid 19th century when it was adapted as a showroom and picture gallery for David Ramsay Hay, Scotland’s leading house painter, decorator and colour theorist.
